Dyson repair service review: Thumbs up

A couple of weeks ago our trusty old Dyson cut out. It felt very hot so we let it rest for a couple of hours while I searched the Internet for a replacement vacuum cleaner. I’m lucky as I visit new houses every week and have road tested hundreds.
I’ve been impressed by the Seebo. So selected a vacuum cum carpet cleaner that seemed to be just the ticket. The only problem was the price really cut into the pot of gold that we are saving for our oil tank refill.
When Danny tried the Dyson again it purred into life and continued for a good half hour before it coughed briefly and filled the room with acrid smoke.
I had a brainwave. Why not try and find a replacement on Freecycle? The worldwide recycling scheme where people offer unwanted goods to others. I joined a couple of groups and discovered that there were two vacuum cleaners up for grabs. I quickly emailed the owners and waited for a response. A kind lady did get back to me a few days later but by then I had the repairing bit well between my teeth.
I toured the DIY repair sites on the Internet and discovered that someone in Australia had replaced the motor on their Dyson, with step by step instructions. I was pretty sure that I needed to replace the motor. So I rang Dyson and explained the problem. The friendly man on the line explained that I needed a motor and a filter. These came to around £47.00. Then he told me about the Dyson servicing scheme. For £65.00 (including VAT) an engineer would call, service the machine and replace any parts (except the accessories).
“It’s possible that you need other parts so this could be a good option for you.”
And it was. The engineer called and disassembled the cleaner in seconds. He went out to the van and bought back a large sack filled with the relevant spare parts. As for as I could see this was most of the moving parts – I’ve just had a quick look at the Dyson spare parts list and ours totalled just under £112.00. All guaranteed for a year of carefree vacuuming.
Due to certain laziness on my part regarding washing the filters, our Dyson had been a rather faded dust nibbling assistant for years. Now it was transformed into a dust chomping animal with a roar that had Danny rushing downstairs to marvel at the beast.
Hats off to Dyson.

Hi there! I’m glad that my Dyson repair story was of some use to you. I had no idea they had a house call service. I probably still would have done it myself just because I’m like that (!), but having another 12 months of warranty does sound very appealing.
Laughed out loud at the image of the disappearing Min Pins, wasn’t there an ad a while ago where the gormless guy though he had vacuumed up the dog when he saw half a lead hanging out? I have given up trying to work out the mental machinations of car vandals. My rear windscreen was also smashed(some time between the two wiper attacks)and I’m sure I would have felt much less ticked off if they had done it to actually break in.

I suspect that the filters were the problem. 5 years of suction and then semi suction. Do you work for Dyson?

I hate those people who try to trash cars. It’s mindless and horrible for the owners.
Once someone smashed a few pint glasses into Jalopy’s roof. Parked in London – a side street. Back then she wasn’t a luxury car. I wondered why?

Great! The repair service won me back from the brink. And that’s what i’s all about, repairing rather than chucking stuff.
We’ve got our dyson off freecycle! It’s amazing and I can confirm that until we got the dyson we have just been moving dust about. It’s horrific to see how much hair comes off the carpets and how much dirt too!
I picked up a Dyson DC03 at my local “Civic Amenity” site. Net cost: nil. The Handle was broken, and the beater bar warn and the clip on the dust collector had broken off too. A new handle and dust collector are about £27 each and the beater is not cheap so I sent it to Dyson and almost every part was replaced. New motor, new mains cable and plug, new wheels, new dust collector and cyclone. In fact only the main chassis was original. It cost about £60 including Dyson’s courier pick up and delivery service because I live on a tiny island with no Dyson service engineers. When it came back it was perfect.
I bought my first ever Dyson a month ago and realised that until now I’ve just been moving dust around from one place to another.
Finally a tool that actually does the job it’s supposed to do!
I hope that(when I need it)the servicing is as good here as it seems to be in the UK.
I love a bargain and you definitely got a good deal out of the servicing scheme! Shame I can’t say the same for the cost of replacing my rear windscreen wiper due to vandalism – for the second time.
We too have recently had a brilliant service from Dyson. The engineer came out for a relatively small repair, gave it a service too, all for a reasonable price. Would certainly buy Dyson in the future for the after sales service alone!
Keep the filtres clean- it really makes a big difference- mine cut out the other week and it was the filtres causing it to overheat…they were shamefully filthy!
