Crocs: a review

Inca and I are still regularly attending the Animal Health Trust. She is undergoing a course of Chemotherapy which seems to be working well. Inca is very lucky she is been treated by Lara Matiasek who is one of the Senior clinicians in neurology. Inca likes Lara although there is often a bit of a struggle when she is carried away!

Generally all the vets wear loose blue tops and slacks and very strange brightly coloured shoes. These shoes intrigued me and eventually I just had to ask about them.
“I do hope that you don’t mind me asking but why do you all wear these rubber shoes?”
“Of course I don’t.” Replied Lara as she slipped of a lime green shoe. “They are plastic and so light that it doesn’t feel as if you are even wearing shoes.”
They were extremely light.
“I first saw them in the States and wondered why so many people were wearing such hideous shoes. Then I saw that they were on offer here so I thought I’d test them out. I wouldn’t dream of wearing them outside of here but they’re great for work.”

My half sized Wellington boots were getting a bit hot. Not having any old shoes to wear in the garden, I needed some summer gardening shoes – perhaps these would be the answer? I discovered that the shoes are called Crocs they are quite expensive and very, very well reviewed. There are discounts to be had on Crocs though – I wanted a pair of the Crocs Cayman sandals. I got a good deal on a pair of red ones.

They do look odd – very broad, like a child’s shoe. But they are a delight to wear, well ventilated and easy to slip on and off.  Apparently you need to choose a slightly bigger size than you would normally wear – I found this clever sizing chart this morning.

Unlike Lara, I’m loathe to take these shoes off and would wear them anywhere! Mud does get into the shoes but I don’t find this a problem as it’s a great excuse for a relaxing footbath at the end of the day – my idea of heaven.

Totally agree – Crocs are ugly but oh so comfortable!!! I wear them all the time at home and in the garden, and so does my husband. Once in a while I wash them in the washing machine at 40°, they look brand new afterwards.

I love my Crocs. I have the original clog style ones – still going strong (although fading fast now) after 3 years! Colour described as Ocean blue, obviously more Indian Ocean than Solway Firth! I also have a pair of grey and light blue flip flops which I bought in a sale at Liverpool Airport last September on my way to Nice and are the most comfortable flip flops I have ever had. My little sister looks wistfully at my shoes and says “but they are ok on you as you have such small feet”. Have you tried proper gardening clogs which don’t have the drainage holes and offer more protection against the thorns?

  3. Comfortable, yes! Practical, yes! VFM, yes! Pretty… so no.

  4. I find them uncomfortable as well as impossible to wear – I have narrow feet and can’t keep them on, and they’re so wide that they hit the inside of my other leg when I walk.

I love my Crocs and have several pairs, they are not all as quirky looking as the Cayman, I also have a style called Patricia and I buy them from a company in Wales, http://www.jellyegg.com/Crocs/Crocs-Sandals/sc1276/p6512.aspx

    Hi Fiona,
Thanks for the tip on Crocs!
I’m always on the lookout for comfort! I tend to stay in the same shoes once I’ve found a comfortable pair, I never thought of these though! They would be ideal for me & any other RA sufferers, thank you!

Just clicked the link and see it WAS Amazon!

  8. I live in Crocs most of the year – the most comfortable shoes ever! The only thing you have to watch in the garden is thorns. They go through the soles very easily and I’ve had “stabbed” feet on many occasions!

Don’t know where you found yours, but Amazon often have them at around £10 a pair which is great value.

They are quite the most ugly things but so comfy.

I help a friend out at yarn fairs and they aree the best after 4 days of standing. Bliss on the feet.

All the doctors and nurses wear these in Italian hospitals – or a similar make. I always thought that it was for hygiene reasons – easy to hose down, but comfort is probably an aspect too.

I have one pair of real crocs and several fake ones in various colours. I always wear my posh pair when flying – apart from the comfort, they are a doddle to slip off if you are asked to when going through security.
